Creating a Mirror Effect with Paint Shop Pro

Step 1: Start with a new transparent image, 550X400 - add a new raster layer and name it "Background". Flood fill this new layer with a dark Linear Gradient set at an angle of 180 & 0 repeats - make sure that the "Invert box" is checked. For this tutorial I have selected a dark blue (#000052) for the foreground color & black as my background color.

Step 2: Layers, New raster layer - name this "Sunburst Gradient" - your gradient will be the Foreground/Background and should still be the same colors as used in step 1. Using the Sunburst Gradient (still with the invert box checked) and horizontal/vertical set at 50, no repeats, flood fill your new layer. Now move the opacity slider down to 65, blend mode normal.

Step 3: Layers, new raster layer - name this "Tube" - select a tube of your choice. On the tutorial I chose a pink rose I had photographed (download it for tutorial purposes here). Keeping the scale at 100, place one rose on your new layer. Now move it up towards the top of your canvas and on the layers pallete, change the blend mode to Luminance.

Step 4: Layers, duplicate & then Image - flip. Move your tube up so that the upper portion of your flipped tube blends in with the lower portion of your original tube layer. Keep the blend mode as Luminace but move the opacity slider down to around 45.

...Now would be a good time to save your work...

Step 5: Go back down to your Background layer (layer 2) and go to Layers, Duplicate. On this new layer, using the Selection Tool (set to rectangle, 0 feather & antialias checked) starting at 0/200 move your selection tool all the way to the right and bottom (550/400). Do not deselect - now hit the delete button on your keyboard - then go to Image, flip. Go to Selections, None. Now hide all of the layers above this layer (click on the eyeglass on the layer pallette, a red x will appear on the eyeglasses). What will remain is the lower portion of the image. You will now need to move the remaining rectangle 1/2 down, so that the image on this layer is now on the bottom half of your canvas (do not just flip the image as you want the lighter color to be at the top of the lower half of image). Move the opacity slider on this layer to 60, blend mode will be normal. At this point you should be able to see a mirroring effect appear (see example below).

Step 6: Go back up to your Sunburst Gradient layer and move the opacity slider to 65. You still won't see any changes but that's alright.

...Now would be a good time to save your work...

Step 7: Now go up to the copy of the tube layer and move the tube down to just below where the mirror effect starts. Then go to your tube layer and move it down to where the bottom blends in with the top of the copied tube layer (see image below).

Step 8: Go back up to the top layer, which should be the copy of your tube layer. Now go to Layers, new raster layer. Name this "Light"e;. Select your freehand tool with a feather of 26-30, start at the coordinates of 50/0, draw out a jagged freehand selection that encircles the top tube image and cuts into the bottom tube image (see example on left below for freehand selection before feathering and on the right shows the feathered selection. Do not deselect!!
Now using your flood fill tool, with the foreground color being white (#FFFFFF) flood fill your newly created selection. Deselect. Go to Effects, Blur, Gaussian Blur with radius of 10. Click ok and then hit Control/y on your keyboard to duplicate the blur, do this a total of 6 additional times (for a total of 7 blurs). Now change the blend mode to "Overlay" and move the opacity slider down to 30.

...Now would be a good time to save your work...

We are now finished with the basic mirrored tutorial. You can save this as a psp file for future use or you can merge all of your layers - frame it or whatever you would like. My completed image is shown below.
